Facebook set for a Challenge

Google is rumored to be releasing a new social networking platform “Google Me” to oppose Facebook. Currently Google has a reach of 43% of global internet users daily, whereas Facebook has 33%.

The rumor was started by Digg co-founder Kevin Rose with a tweet. Citing a “very credible source” and carefully branding it a “huge rumor,” Rose gossiped that Google plans on launching Google Me “very soon.”

Obviously Google is going to put its heart and soul into killing Facebook if it can, as it is creeping up on being the number one site in the world. Within a few years maximum it would definately pull that rank.

I personally think Google does have the potential to launch a successful social networking platform, that could be a Facebook killer, but they do have a LOT of work to catch up. I believe this will only happen if they make it really easy to integrate pre-existing Facebook applications (by non-Facebook businesses) etc to suit Google Me.

Do you think Facebook’s 400 million + users will make the switch? Or will it just be another Google Buzz … without the buzz?

Will this change social networking forever, or will it be a flop like Google Buzz?
